Effective Governance

Effective Communication and Conflict Resolution (4 days presented 2 x 2 days)

Conflict can have a huge effect on morale, teamwork and ultimately meeting your service objectives if not managed.  Anyone who has to deal with situations where there is a difference in personalities, values or standards that may lead to confrontation would benefit from attending this course. All participants will receive a workbook that provides great reference material for the future.

This course is designed to help provide the necessary insights and relevant skills that can be applied whenever conflict does arise. Manager Development (4 day intensive or 6 days / 6 months)

The aim of this course is to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours associated with being a successful manager. Ideal for new managers and those that have been promoted into the role or for those managers who need a refresher, this course will prepare you for the challenges that being a manager will bring.

Participants will gain a thorough understanding of management theory and practice and will be able to utilise their new skills in the workplace to demonstrate that they are effective, motivational and organised. 

Note:  This course requires participants to complete a workplace project

Lead & Develop Others (4 days or 6 days)

"Understanding leadership is the ‘single most important task for society today'." (Donald Krause 1997)

Effective Leadership is crucial for agencies in the health and community welfare sector.  This course has been developed to enhance leadership skills.  Participants need to identify as a potential leader and have to motivation to attend to the course and participate in modules of practice in the workplace.

Introduction to Theoretical & Practice Frameworks in OOHC

Working with children, young people and families in OOHC can be stressful it can be hard to come up with the next step and how to measure if what I do works? Understanding key theoretical frameworks and incorporating the associated approaches provides the foundation for good practice. Over two days participants will be introduced to theoretical frameworks that assist workers from planning the ‘how to’ work with a client through to when they have to think on their feet. We will explore current client issues and see how different framework approaches may change the outcome.

Participants gain an understanding of how to apply frameworks that fit current thinking and how they apply to themselves as workers.

Case Management (OOHC, Disability and General)
Case management is an approach to arranging and coordinating care in its broadest definition. It is based on the recognition that a trusting and empowering direct relationship between the case worker and the client is essential to advance the client’s use of services along a continuum of care and to restore or maintain the client’s independent functioning to the fullest extent possible.

A caseworker needs to have the capacity to provide assistance in a sensitive and supportive manner to particular client populations based on knowledge of human behaviour and well developed observational and communication skills. With this foundation, a caseworker establishes helping relationships, assesses complex problems, selects problem-solving interventions, and helps clients to function effectively this then creates a therapeutic process.
Participants will be introduced to effective case management methods and develop key strategies to strengthen casework practice.

Facilitating Good Case Conferences (OOHC, Disability and General)
This course will explore in depth the ways to ensure that case conferences operate effectively. The course will cover the preparation, structuring and facilitation of case conferences, recording and follow-up. The course will also cover, in brief, the particular requirements of protection planning meetings. The new requirements of the Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act in regard to case planning, review and case conferencing will be examined and incorporated into strategies developed.

Understanding the Impact of Trauma & Abuse (OOHC) (1 day)
Most children and young people who have been placed in Out of Home Care have had some exposure to trauma and abuse. Experiencing physical, psychological, emotional or sexual abuse and / or neglect can have a profound impact on a child or young person’s development. This module provides a basis for understanding the impact that a child or young person’s early history and experiences have had on their development and subsequent skills and difficulties. The module covers the following areas:

  • Understanding the attachment process.
  • Identifying the different types of abuse.
  • An overview of the impact of trauma, abuse, neglect, and rejection

Profiling (OOHC, Disability and General) (1 day)
Children and young people who have been placed in Out of Home Care often have specific difficulties that require ongoing support and planning. Developing an awareness about all of the specific issues which impact on the development and well-being of the child or young person you are providing support for is critical in maintaining a sustainable placement, and ensuring that your child or young person is receiving the specific supports that he / she needs. This module will assist you to build your understanding of the child or young person in your care by helping you understand and analyse key issues and specific difficulties.

Positive Behaviour Support for Children & Young People with High Needs (OOHC) (1 day)
Children and young people in Out of Home Care often display behaviours that are challenging both for carers, and other people in community. Understanding what Positive Behaviour Support is all about, and learning the basic underpinning framework that provides support to children and young people with intensive behaviour support needs are essential prerequisites for working in residential care, and supporting a high needs foster care placement.

Guided Incident Response Training (G.I.R.T.) (OOHC, Disability and General) (2 - 3 day)
This course aims to assist staff and carers develop the skills and awareness required to prevent and manage incidents in a safe and informed way. Participants will receive a training manual, and undertake a mixture of tutorials, workbook tasks, scenario exercises, and the practice of physical management techniques.

Guided Incident Response Training can support individuals and staff teams to develop the ability to manage incidents in a manner that helps minimise risk, and provides better outcomes for staff, agencies, and clients.

Working with Adults who have a history of Complex Trauma* (Disability & General) (2 days)

This course is suitable for those working with people who have a history trauma and abuse and complex emotional and behavioural presentations.  It provides participants with an understanding of the impact of trauma and abuse on adult personality functioning; an understanding of some of the common presenting issues and behaviours (e.g. Self harm, aggression, emotion regulation difficulties, impulsivity); an understanding of the principles of intervention and support; and an awareness of the service systems issues associated with the support of this client group.

This emphasis of the course is on making a difference through developing understanding, building solid foundations, and using evidence based approaches.
